Norrsken Mind is funding a research project to produce a comprehensive report on reimbursement pathways for psychedelic treatments in Europe. The project is led by Floris Wolswijk, founder of Blossom (a psychedelic science and insight platform), and Martin Gisby, independent healthcare consultant with over 15 years of experience.
Psychedelic therapies are already available in some countries, and they are showing promise for a range of mental health conditions. However, the unique characteristics of these treatments present significant challenges for reimbursement, which could limit patient access. Psychedelic therapies often involve not just the medication but also psychotherapy and extended clinic time, leading to higher upfront costs than traditional treatments.
As psychedelic therapies may become increasingly integrated in mental healthcare systems over the coming years, there are pressing questions for healthcare payers and insurers about how to evaluate and fund these treatments while ensuring sustainable access for patients who could benefit most.
This report will provide a clear roadmap, examining the entire process from drug development and clinical trials through regulatory approvals, health technology assessments (HTAs), and ultimately, pricing and insurance coverage. It will analyse key challenges and opportunities across multiple European healthcare systems, drawing on real-world case studies from several countries, including Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the Czech Republic. The report will offer actionable recommendations for all stakeholders – from drug developers and insurers to policymakers, clinicians, and patient advocates – focusing on practical solutions that can help integrate these innovative treatments into existing healthcare frameworks.
The report is expected to be published by the end of Q1 2025. Do you have valuable insights to share about psychedelic therapy reimbursement? We encourage you to contact Floris Wolswijk and Martin Gisby to share your expertise and contribute to this important project.
